First, tongue. (Yummy…gimmie…oh fuck. No! Stop! I’m sorry.)
During the first Love On Tour show in Chicago, IL on September 24th, Harry was bombarded by an army of sign-totting fans that demanded “Justice For To Be So Lonely.” Ah, brilliant. Just brilliant.
Side Note: Harold, please, sir. Keep that ass under control. You can hurt somebody with that thang! Poor Mitch just has to put up with his antics lmao.
It would seem their wish was his command. On September 25th, during his second show in Chicago, Harry finally performed TBSL, which was the only song from Fine Line being neglected by his new setlist.
I suppose this is a testament to how receptive and caring Harry is of his audience. He listens to them, he appreciates them, and he makes things happen to please them. How adorable.
Harries are geniuses…sometimes. They weren’t going for the outright discrimination against “To Be So Lonely” on Love On Tour and neither was I. Especially since I heard he kept sound-checking it most nights but wouldn’t actually perform it. I do wonder what the hold up was? Was he hesitant for emotional reasons or was it more to do with the logistics of the set and timeframe?
There are two songs on Fine Line that I scream-sing every time without fail. That is “Adore You” and “To Be So Lonely”. I hold TBSL in very high esteem and I believe the sentiment behind the lyrics packs a powerful punch. It is also my belief that it expounds on a narrative found first in “Falling,” seeing as how the lyrics seem to be a continuation of the opening lyrics about Harry fooling around or sleeping with someone else, losing his battle with loneliness and jealousy while on the road. It also falls directly behind “Falling” on the track-list.
*cough, cough* A track-list that held the power to bring two long-lost lovers back in touch within hours of its November 19th release back in 2019. (*eyeroll*)
I also think the lyrics and the title are a direct response to Zayn’s “sHe” from 2016, which we know is one of two songs whose track titles Harry copied identically for Fine Line. Notice above how “She” falls directly behind “To Be So Lonely” on the infamous track-list? That was all PURPOSEFULLY DONE. From “Falling” to “To Be So Lonely” to “She”. We were SUPPOSED to draw those connections. Harry wanted us to make them, 1000%.
“Cause baby don’t want to be lonely.” Harry responds to these lyrics in “To Be So Lonely” by saying “Don’t call me baby again, it’s hard for me to go home and be so lonely.” I don’t know why Harry didn’t just put this lyrical response directly into “She” (like he did with “take me back to the light” in “Golden”) but he did in fact respond identically to a lyric in “sHe” with “To Be So Lonely.”
Harry Styles is a fucking genius. I don’t care whether you like him or disagree with him or not, you have to respect how meticulous he is when it comes to music and expressing himself. The more I study Fine Line, the more I notice all the painstakingly placed breadcrumbs he left behind for anyone who was searching. This album implicates Zayn in far more ways than I originally thought. Even the order of the freaking track-list is not without many carefully strategized story-telling devices. Ugh.
Side Note: Fucking *drools*
Told ya’ll he was an angel. I get such shit for calling him an angel all the time but here is the scientific proof to support what I’m saying. Who can argue with sCiENcE? Don’t be anti-science:
Here is the full performance of “To Be So Lonely” which I think Harry performs so well every time, and he also just looks really good and comfortable onstage. Thank God.
Harry trying to make a fan propose is just so…Harry:
What exactly is he trying to do to us????????
Fuck this man astounds me, despite how much I hate him for Holivia. I’m going to make a major recap video on this album soon!
